Where to Start

Creating a website used to be daunting, but now there are so many different options to help you create your website. Before you jump into creating your website, you really need to understand the goal of your website. Here are some questions to keep in mind:

  • Do you have merchandise you want to sell on your website?
  • Do you want your website to be a source of information for viewers?
  • Do you want to create a website to blog on?
  • Do you want to use this website as a portfolio to display your work?

I have done some research on popular website builders and compiled the information into a chart, so you can determine what’s best for you. Keep in mind that these are just a few website building options. These options don’t require you to have experience in coding, but a couple of them give you the ability to code some of your website if you please.

Free Custom Domain: If price is an issue, all four of these are great options. They allow you to create a custom domain for FREE! However, the free option generally has a tag on the URL such as . . .

. . . which can be slightly unprofessional. You can upgrade your account so that it doesn’t include that.

Free Option: How important is price to you? Weebly and Wix are great options for free, but they can be limiting. It might cost extra to get exactly what you want, so keep that in mind!

Mobile Responsive: Think about your target market – Is it beneficial that you have a mobile responsive website? If your target market is the older generation, then you may feel that you don’t really need a mobile friendly website.

SEO: Search Engine Optimization

  • Wix allows you to customize your pages’ URL so that search engines will better understand the reason behind your page and connect consumers with exactly what they are looking for.
  • Squarespace has a feature called “Google Author Rank” that is built into your profile to help improve your search engine exposure.

E-Commerce: If the sole purpose of your website is E-Commerce, I would suggest using Shopify or BigCommerce. Wix is still a great option, but Shopify and BigCommerce are designed for E-Commerce websites. Shopify and BigCommerce have a cool feature that Wix doesn’t offer called “Abandoned Cart Recover.” Abandoned Cart Recovery allows you to email consumers to remind them of the products that they left in their cart.

  • Wix allows you to style your blog background and integrate with Facebook so that your readers can comment on your work.
  • Squarespace gives you the ability to schedule when you want to publish your post. It also can connect and automatically publish to your social media accounts.
  • Weebly provides blogging templates and also allows you to schedule when to publish your post.

Design Assistant: Wix is the only website builder that offers this cool feature. Design assistant uses artificial intelligence to create a website layout and design for you, and then it will insert your content for you automatically.

There are plenty of options to help you make a great website, but first, figure out what you want your website to do!
