My Homepage

I’d like to preface this blog by stating that while the information in this blog may seem obvious to some, it is essential for all great websites.

As I have mentioned before, I have analyzed a few retailer websites. There are typically a few things I look for as soon as I hit the homepage. Most importantly, I look to see that the homepage is unique.  Your homepage should be inviting and represent your brand. It can be hard to reflect your brand over the web because there’s no face-to-face interaction, but there are a few ways to create that relationship through your homepage.

Here are a few things that I look for in an effective homepage:

  • Brand Experience and Personality
  • Simple and Clear Design
  • Enticing Call-to-Action
  • Store Reviews

Brand Experience and Personality: When viewers go to your homepage, they should feel like they are stepping foot into your store. This is especially true even if you don’t have a store. With the amount of brick-and-mortar stores decreasing, consumers are looking towards your website for everything they would experience walking into your store and more.

I have included a snapshot of Herbal Essences’ homepage. The video engages viewers and demonstrates the natural branding of Herbal Essences.

Simple Design: While your website should reflect your brand, it should not overflow with overwhelming information. It can feel disorganized and cluttered, and viewers may associate that feeling with your brand.

Apple uses a simple, clean website design that coincides with their products – innovative technology that’s easy to use. Often times, websites feel overwhelmed with information, but Apple uses long, scrolling pages to provide a lot of information while still maintaining a simple design.

Enticing Call-To-Action: An effective website calls for an immediate response to keep people on your page. This may include a sign up button, search feature, or “subscribe to our email” pop-up.

Netflix displays a great CTA the second you hit the homepage. The homepage clearly highlights the features of Netflix and makes it simple to sign up for a free trial.

Company Reviews: Reviews are an easy way for consumers to verify your brand. You can link your Google Reviews to your homepage, so your reviews are easy to find. If you offer a specific product (like Tempur-Pedic), then your website should definitely offer reviews about the product.

Just to reiterate, your homepage should feel unique and reflect your brand. Thanks for reading, and I hope you found this informative!
