Over the course of the past few weeks, shocking allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein have come to light.  Several female actresses have stepped forward saying Weinstein sexually abused or mistreated them in some way.  As a result, Weinstein has been fired from his own company, his wife filed for divorce, and is under investigation by the police.  Because of this day and age, several of the actresses told their story through the use of social media.

As of today, over 40 actresses have come forward claiming sexual misconduct.  Cara Delevingne and Kate Beckinsale came forward on Instagram while Rose McGowan and Lena Headey com forward through Twitter.  All of these famous females started a movement called #MeToo.  They want to bring awareness to the astronomical amount of sexual misconduct faced by women.  If you were sexually abused, you are called to share #MeToo on social media.

As a result of #MeToo, people from all over the world have come out showing support and partaking in the movement.  I think this is a great way to show how common sexual assault is and what a problem it is in our society.  However, I am a little troubled.  Are we equivocating “catcalling” to rape?  Is an unwanted pick up line the same as years of sexual assault?  I can’t help but wonder if rape victims are having their assaults minimalized so everyone can talk about that time a creepy guy wanted to buy them a drink in a bar.

#MeToo is such an important movement, but I hope it is taken seriously and victims are actually coming out to show awareness to the horrific actions they have been forced to deal with.
