I can not count how many times the Facebook app on my phone has updated over the past few years. It seems like every time I open the app, something has changed. Sometimes it looks different immediately, but other times I don’t realize the change until I can’t figure out how to upload a photo. This most recent update is not to the surface, however. It is a change in the algorithm embedded in the site.
Facebook has announced that they will be reducing the presence of ads and returning focus to the social interactions of friends and family. They claim to be putting the focus on comments rather than likes. They want people to be talking and collaborating. So posts with more comments and interaction will be higher on your timeline.
For businesses who rely on Facebook ads and publicity, they will have to change their approach. Facebook users could always tailor their interests, which was supposed to control the sponsored posts they saw. However, now they can do so even more. Businesses will need to increase the use of their other digital marketing channels if they have not already done so.
I, for one, do get annoyed with the amount of ads now on Facebook, but I became accustomed to them over time. It’ll be interesting to see how things will change.
