Most every girl has spent her entire life dreaming of the perfect wedding day. It is an event that constantly remains in your subconscious, starting at age 5, when the princess inside you is positive you will be walking down the aisle in an oversized ball gown, to age 20, when reality finally sets in and you realize you might be better off in a mermaid. From the flawless flower arrangements right down to the font on the name cards, it is a day you want people to remember forever. It’s a day you want even the people that didn’t get the invite talking about, and digital marketing has made that possible.

As a 20-year-old college student, I am at the age where a large number of the people in my network have gotten engaged or married. I am also at an age within a generation that is centered around social media and new technology. Within a couple days after a proposal, there is a large chance that the future bride will post a photo of that picturesque moment the couple shared when he got down on one knee and popped the question. This picture will include some sort of caption about spending the rest of her life with her best friend/soul mate and at the end, the caption will most likely include a hashtag with a play on her future last name.

Just a couple clever examples include:  #Wrenyouknowyouknow # CountdowntoCookston #STOPHanleytime

These hashtags not only serve as a cute way to for people to remember the couple, but a great way to find all the future newlywed’s pictures in one place. When the wedding day finally comes along, all of the guests can post pictures from the event with this hashtag on Instagram. When users click on the hashtag or search it, they can see all of the pictures from the wedding in one place. Large brand names use hashtags in this same way in order to expand their reach and increase their exposure.

So should we be concerned that wedding hashtags are rising to the top of a brides to do list after a proposal rather than what kind of wedding dress she wants? Or should we be excited about the potential of this technology to share these incredible life moments far beyond one’s reach?

I am also super guilty of daydreaming about what my hashtag would be if I were to be married with my boyfriend! The happiness when you finally think of the perfect hashtag may be just as equal to actually getting married!
