Dawg with a Blog: Athens Humane Society

Have you seen the adorable dog posts and videos on Instagram and Facebook? Personally, I know that I can easily get sucked into scrolling through dog pictures for 20 minutes. I also know that I am not the only one. The number of times I have seen friends and family being tagged in pictures is too many to count, and that’s just in a day. So how can a business capitalize on our obsession with cute pooches?

The Athens Humane Society has been rescuing and caring for animals for the past 25 years. From dogs to cats, the humane society’s doors have been open for pets and strays alike, and they are an organization whose sole focus is to help any animal they can. The humane society helps to facilitate adoptions as well as provide low cost vaccinations and medical procedures for animals.

Starting in 2013, the Athens Humane Society began posting pictures of their adoptable dogs and cats (and sometimes the occasional hamster or rabbit) on Instagram. Prior to this, going into your local Humane Society was really the only way you could see the adoptable animals. With Instagram, you are now able to see what future pets are available in real time, and even if you aren’t looking for a new pet, you still get sucked into the adorable animals that are posted. The Athens Humane Society also posts about events with other local businesses. By connecting with other businesses, the Humane Society is able to reach more potential pet owners and collect donations.

Instagram has allowed for the Athens Humane Society to reach people both in Athens and miles away. With the goal of finding safe, long term homes for all animals, Instagram has aided the Humane Society greatly in the age of social media. Instagram has ultimately helped pets find their FURever homes.

I love how you talked about how social media can impact nonprofits positively. In today’s society social media is often used in superficial light and your blog helps to dispel that! Great work!
