Frugal and Fabulous – Interior Design Tips from a Financial Planner (#1)

When I first perused “Pinterest” — a website my grandmother had suggested as “a phenomenal reference for succulent care” (No Joke), I found it to be a dazzling assortment of decor, fashion, food — and just about anything else I could think to search up. In my first few months, I would lackadaisically scroll through the images and occasionally stop to pin one I liked. Before I knew it, this (seemingly) semi-sentient site had begun to tailor the images that I was shown into what became a creepily accurate collection of things I was attracted to. Above all, the interiors interested me. When I created separate boards for each room in the house; bedroom, bathroom, living room, and even foyer — I knew I had gotten the interior design bug. There was only one teeny tiny problem: houses with antique oriental rugs, custom bed skirts, and trimmed topiaries became my new standard. Needless to say, moving into a dorm was a little underwhelming for me. I was a poor college student with champagne dreams and caviar wishes.

As I now sit on the cusp of the real world, I’ve accepted a job in wealth management. After a three month internship where I found myself repeatedly telling clients that in order to effectively save for their child’s education, they would need to stop spending 5,000 dollars monthly on Amazon purchases (shocking I know), my frugality was even further engrained. Unfortunately, my expensive taste in interiors did not change. After graduation, I’ll be living in a Buckhead apartment with my very established 27-year-old sister, who will, thankfully, be taking on the lion’s share of the rent. As I currently stand, I feel as those I’ve been given the keys to the palace with only peanuts to decorate it! This brings us to the aim of this blog and the meaning of its exceedingly cheesy title. In this 10-week series, I will be showcasing some of my favorite pieces from very luxe sources (Veranda Magazine, Architectural Digest, etc.) in conjunction with very similar, yet affordable, alternatives. I’ll explore the ways in which the two various vendors market their product and delve into a short analysis explaining why one is priced at a much more affordable level.

Thank you for reading and look out for next week’s installment on starburst mirrors! Woohoo, Mirrors!!!!
