My name is Justin Stevens and like most people I love food. I love eating food, cooking, food, and watching the food/travel channel (even though my roommates roast me for it). I grew up only 20 minutes away from Athens, so I consider myself a local even though I am currently a student here at UGA. I remember as a child coming to Athens with my parents to sporting events or to go shopping. While in town we would always stop to eat somewhere, usually the Varsity (cant go wrong there), doing this so many times made me realize the food scene in Athens is unlike anywhere else that I visited often. For example, name another local town where you can get hot freshly baked cookies delivered to your front door at 1 AM. When I moved permanently to Athens in 2015, I realized Athens had even more to offer than I had even known about. During my blogs this semester I’m going to try and focus on the smaller restaurants here in town, I’m going visit at least one new restaurant a week to see how they try to be competitive in the market, how they connect to their customers using social platforms, and my favorite part; how good the food is.
Like I said before, I have been visiting (and eating in) Athens my whole life so I am pretty familiar with most of the popular places in town. I am looking forward to trying some of the places I haven’t been yet. If some of you do start following along, I will happily take recommendations to certain restaurants and what to order. Over the next couple of days I will set up a new Instagram just for the purpose of this blog and post the link in my next blog.
Now that I have laid the ground work for what I will be doing, I just wanted to throw in that Grindhouse is the best burger place in Athens, and if you are of age the happy hour deals are hard to beat. They offer a variety of the classic burger place fare, but also offer other interesting options. They are very active on Instagram and have actually reposted a few pictures I have posted on my personal instagram. If you haven’t been, I would definitely suggest you check it out.
