Music Industry & Digital Marketing: 2 Chainz

A couple of months ago, Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz released his new album Pretty Girls Like Trap Music. The album debuted at #2 on the right behind Lorde’s Melodrama. While 2 Chainz is popular enough to not necessarily need to go above and beyond for marketing, he did. 2 Chainz and his team got a house in Atlanta and painted it pink with the word “TRAP” written on the from of the house. The house is featured on the album’s artwork. This led many of his fan to the house to take their own photo at the front stoop. Obviously, many of those pictures were later posted to the social media accounts of his various fans. Not only was 2 Chainz able to get his superfans more excited about the album by providing them with a very fun, innovative and personalized experience, but through social media the photos of the fans at the house basically provided its own form of personalized marketing. I know I saw it on a my instagram a couple of times. To be honest, I am not even a huge fan of 2 Chainz, but I think the fact that the very first blog I am writing for this class is about his marketing campaign proves a level of success.

The marketing campaign is quite possibly a stroke of genius. Within days, the house had become a popular tourist destination. Those who had never even heard of 2 chains, found themselves listening to his music because they wanted to know the man behind the pink house. The negative press was present, but as they say, all pub is good pub.
