If a band wants to be successful in the current age of digital marketing, it is basically a requirement for them to be active on social media. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all provide bands with an excellent way to reach out to and connect with fans, promote shows and new material, and generally make their name known to the world. However, what most music listeners find when browsing various artists’ social media accounts boils down to shameless self promotion. Many artists believe that simply posting about upcoming shows and albums is enough to engage fans, but ultimately drive fans away when their attempts to “connect” with people are obvious promotional devices.
One artist that has done something different with social media Mac DeMarco, and he provides a good example for other similar bands to to follow. Rather than taking himself too seriously on social media and only posting about what fans should buy or what shows they should attend, DeMarco uses social media to further solidify his image as a goofball and regular guy. When browsing his twitter page, one can find a variety of posts about travel, food and comedy, as well as his music. He constantly asks fans for advice on places to eat and attractions to visit, and further engages them by offering situations to actually hang out with him in person, such as this post about the new star wars movie: “Will someone
#pleasetake #meandkiera to #forceawakens on the #18th in #nyc??? I’ll #buythepopcorn and #drive. #jarjarabrams”
By providing real opportunities for fans to connect and hang out, DeMarco separates himself from the millions of other artists self promoting through digital marketing. In this way he has gained a fanbase that is constantly growing and extremely loyal.
