Take the Chill Off

Take the Chill Off

I woke up to a glorious email reading “School Will Be Closed” on Wednesday morning and was actually thankful for snow. However, I am used to the cold weather, icy streets, and big puffy jackets. Having grown up in New York my whole life, I even looked forward to the 1-2 feet of snow that never failed to cover the earth each January. It would rarely result in no school, but gave the neighborhood a reason to bundle up, go sledding down the biggest hills in town, and make a rich cup of hot chocolate.

This snow day went a little differently than that. I still drank hot chocolate, but drank it downtown at my favorite bar, Woodford. Woodford is a well-known bar on Washington Street in Athens, Georgia, home to many loud and fun juniors and seniors. It is the main bar my friends and I choose to go to on a Friday or Saturday night…or Wednesday afternoon! This snow day, Woodford was creative in their approach to bringing customers into the bar. Rather than staying inside, avoiding the icy streets, crisp wind, and treacherous snow fall (1-2 inches at most…), Woodford opened up their doors to invite everyone in for a special spiked hot chocolate!

This hot chocolate was decorated to the brim with chocolate sauce, marshmallows, and even a dash of cinnamon. It was a creative and fun way to embrace the cold. I first found out about this special drink through social media. Everyone was posting enticing pictures of this extravagant drink all over their accounts. I turned to Snapchat and Instagram and saw nothing but hot chocolate, hot chocolate, and more hot chocolate! Additionally, Woodford posted an Instagram regarding this special drink saying “Come get your snow day on at Woodford when we open up at 3:30 with $3 Wells & $3 Drafts…there might even be hot chocolate for those smart enough to ask.”

The whole bar was buzzing with kids wearing hats, scarves, boots, and a spiked hot chocolate in hand. When I looked around the streets of downtown, I noticed that no other bars were open. Woodford was smart in the sense that they marketed a drink that was exclusively for the snow day. And with the help of social media, it brought even more people into the loud, chilly bar! Nothing like a spiked hot chocolate to take the chill off!
