Netflix: Doing the Impossible?

It is notoriously hard to predict how well movies or television shows will do. Netflix is looking to change that. How are doing this? Big data. Netflix collects and analyzes data on everything you can imagine. The data collected is more than just what Netflix’s over a million users watch, it’s how often those users pause while watching shows, it’s each users’ scrolling patterns, it’s what zip codes shows are watched from, it is everything. Netflix analyzes the huge amount of data and is able to come up with exactly what each subscriber likes and therefore is able to make very accurate suggestions on what the subscriber may like. Netflix is now using the data in another way: to predict what customers want to see. Netflix spent over $100 million to produce House of Cards. They didn’t just randomly decide to invest this much to produce a show. The numbers showed that users would like the show. And they were correct, House of Cards, until a recent Kevin Spacey scandal, was a wild success.  Netflix is doing the impossible- knowing how well a show will do before it is even produced, and this is all thanks to big data they created.
