Blog #2: Ideal Bagel

This past Sunday morning, my friends and I decided to try out Ideal Bagel for the first time. Ideal Bagel seemed very similar to me as to where I went last week (Condor). Both are small, Athens-owned restaurants with very locally-owned type of feels to them. There was a fairly significant line to order at the cash register at Ideal, so I think that with the right marketing and word-of-mouth advertising Ideal Bagel could become a really well-known place to eat in Athens. The food was great and the restaurant itself had a really cool retro-vibe going on.

After eating there, I decided to look up Ideal’s Instagram. At first, I wasn’t even sure if it was a real Instagram account made by the owners of Ideal. The Instagram account, idealbagelco has 115 followers, is following 12 people, and has 2 posts, one from November 2014, and one from October 2014. Needless to say, idealbagelco has very little (to none) activity on their account.

At the same time, I kind of think the very little social media presence of Ideal Bagel fits their whole look. Its very retro, very old-fashioned, and small-town style of them. However, even though it may fit their “style” I don’t know if business-wise it is the smartest or most effective move for them to have basically no social media. Especially when it comes to out-of-towners or home football games, having a large social media presence would be very effective, as they tend to need to look up places when they’re out of town.

While Ideal Bagel having very little social media makes their vibe seem more authentic and real, I have to say I think it could really benefit them by maybe interacting more with locals and posting pictures with them, or even just gaining more followers so that they are more on the top of people’s minds.

I agree that their lack of active social media pages goes with the authentic, retro, small-town feel, but I also think that any business needs social media to stay relevant in today’s world. I am a devoted Ideal Bagel customer and whenever I go the restaurant it seems to be packed. I believe they have quite the draw in the Athens community, but in order to bring in out-of-town visitors, a greater presence on social media sites may help them. I typically try one of the first places I find on google or somewhere with an enticing Instagram page when I’m in a new place. I would like to learn more about the comparison of their social media pages with their competition such as Athens Bagel Company or Condor, as you mentioned above.
