Since its release on Netflix on July 15, 2016, I have become a huge fan of the hit series Stranger Things. The show is centered on a group of friends in Hawkins, Indiana during the 80s. Life takes an interesting turn when one of the main characters, Will, goes missing. His friends Mike, Dustin, and Lucas go looking for him and end up finding Eleven, a girl with a shaved head and the number eleven inked on her arm. There’s plenty of action and science fiction packed into the series and according to my mother it “completely nails the 80s style”. However, one of my favorite parts of the show is the story line concerning the town’s police chief, Chief Hopper.
Hopper is initially hard to like, given his usual drunken stupor and lack of regard for others in his life. However, Hopper as I learned more about his unique plot line and background, I liked him more. It was his hardships that give him charm and a sense of relatability in that he feels things deeply. Hopper is portrayed by the actor David Harbour. Since he is one of my favorites in the show, I followed Harbour on Twitter to keep up with insights into Hopper and other Stranger Things information. Harbour has recently been extremely active on Twitter. He has agreed to officiate one woman’s wedding after she got over two hundred thousand retweets. His most recent interaction was a request to join Greenpeace in Antarctica to see and dance with the penguins. Greenpeace responded with a challenge to get over two hundred thousand retweets and they would request his appearance on the journey to Antarctica. Given his social media following, it didn’t take long for him to reach his goal.
David Harbour has done a truly great job of interacting with his fans and other entities through his Twitter account. He has effectively bolstered the show he stars in, while also creating a separate identity for himself that fans like and respect. He has also simultaneously created content that people are enjoying, while also incorporating his desire to do more, like working with Greenpeace. Harbour, while still not quite a household name, has proven that he has the capability to successfully navigate the Twittersphere and engage his fans with his funny, endearing personality. I think his social media strategy is working and his presence will continue to grow as he continues to create.
