Tourism & Digital Marketing: Spain

After scanning through some other student’s blog posts, I realized that the band and musician theme was more popular than I originally thought. So I’ve decided to change my theme to something else I’m passionate about. I love to travel and was fortunate enough to grow up with parents who prioritized experiences above all else. Each week I’ll pick a different country, each one that I’ve visited before, to analyze the way digital marketing is used to further each country’s unique tourism sector. I’m starting with Spain because it is one of my absolute favorite destinations, and I studied abroad in Valencia a few summers back.

I started my investigation on Spain’s official website for tourism. My first impression is that the website looked crowded and not as aesthetically pleasing as I expected. The site is visually not organized well, but there are a lot of helpful resources and information. The landing page features a highlights slider that resembles a news reel- it features the best of what Spain has to offer and is specific to certain regions. Some cool features of the website are the interactive activities section where you can input a certain region and certain activities like gastronomy or shopping and instantly get recommendations and inspirations. Another interesting category is the “Spain For..” section which includes groups such as families, young people, adults (with or without children, and even the LGBT community. I think it’s cool that Spain is communicating how open their culture is. The website also features easily clickable icons that connect to all of their official social media.

All of these accounts are specified as accounts for the United States, so this tourism industry is getting special attention. Their Instagram is very visually appealing and currently has 285k followers. It mainly focuses on beautiful pictures of the landscape and architecture all around the vast country. The account even encourages users to use their official hashtag in order to give permission to repost- adding an element of interactivity with the account. The Twitter and Facebook accounts are very cohesive and feature lots of visuals of landscapes and foods but also includes more of an educational element about the culture in Spain. I think the website could use a more professional upgrade in terms of organization. Overall, the content is engaging and shows the open, beautiful culture of Spain. I can’t wait to return to the country one day!

I also studied abroad in Valencia! I went the past Summer, in 2017. I love that the tourism website shows how open the environment in Spain is, as I was in Madrid right around the Pride Festival. I look forward to seeing more travel-themed blog posts from you.
