Twitter Reacts to the Super Bowl Matchup

Welcome to week two of the “Twitter Reacts” blog. As you are no doubt aware, there were some pretty big football games over the weekend. In the AFC championship game, the Patriots defeated the Jaguars – much to the annoyance of every non-Patriots fan around the world. In the NFC, the Eagles smoked the Vikings and earned their first trip to the Superbowl since 2004. Let’s look at how Twitter reacted to the championship games.

It’s safe to say most NFL fans were unhappy that the Patriots once again won the AFC and will play in the Super Bowl. Be it because of accusations of cheating, questionable officiating, or dynasty fatigue, most people simply hate the Patriots. It is no surprise then that twitter was on fire with fans blaming the refs and generally just being very angry.

The majority of the annoyance seemed to stem from a couple of crucial referee errors that went the Patriots way. Naturally, memes everywhere started popping up about the refs’ relationship with New England.

Twitter definitely had fun at the expense of the refs, but the real winner of the evening was Hardee’s official account which demonstrated incredibly effective social marketing with this tweet:

The tweet was not only timely, but very funny. Well done, Hardee’s.

Before we finish, let’s check in on how the Eagles fans are celebrating their huge victory of the Vikings:

First off, I think the idea of a “Twitter Reacts” blog is brilliant and am personally kind of upset at myself for not thinking of that because of how much I love Twitter. I saw almost all of these tweets as well and thought they were hilarious. It has become second nature to see the Patriots in the Super Bowl and the sporting world is fed up with it. The referee tweets were spot on as well. It is crazy how friendly they seemed with the Patriot players and how they didn’t get a single penalty against them all game. I don’t want to see Bill in his hoodie on the sidelines or Tom mounting a comeback anymore. As a Falcons fan I am still emotionally damaged from last year and it just stinks to see them back. I think I speak for everyone in America other than New England fans when I say “Go Eagles”.
