If you love video games, especially games on Nintendo, then the initial talks and subsequent release of the new Nintendo Switch, and specifically Super Mario Odyssey, must have been incredibly exciting. The Nintendo Switch is a slick looking device, going with bright controllers to really give it that Nintendo aesthetic and feel. With a new console to sell, Nintendo needed an exceptional game to compliment the new console. Super Mario Odyssey isn’t just a great game with new mechanics, but Nintendo utilized so many old mechanics from old games as well. This allowed them to appeal to the older segment of the gaming population through nostalgia, as well as give the younger segment to get a feel for some homages to old games.
Nintendo also did a great job advertising for Super Mario Odyssey’s release with commercials and online videos. They released a music video (shown below) to advertise the game which received over 9.2 million views in just 2 weeks. Success in advertising the game was proven when Super Mario Odyssey became the second-best-selling game on Amazon for 2017 before it even launched. It shows that for company’s like Nintendo, who have a longtime positive relationship with it’s customers, it’s conceivable to continue to keep tapping in to nostalgic appeal as well as doing what they have always done.
