Before coming to college and definitely before taking any marketing classes, I never quite understood why different companies and Instagram influencers had “giveaways” on their page. Whether it be a gift card, an expensive electronic, clothes, etc., many people seemed to be more than willing to give these things away on their own expense to one lucky winner. The only requirements for being a contestant is usually to like the picture, follow the account, and to tag 3, 4, or 5 of your friends. As I became older and more in tune with marketing techniques, I realized how genius this strategy was, and the trend has been becoming more and more popular ever since. I personally get tagged by my friends in contests and giveaways like these almost every day, and if I see a company or brand that I like, it always sparks my interest.
Without even having to spend an excessive amount, these people and companies are able to grow their following, reach out to a larger sample, and as a result, grow their brand. Instagram is the perfect platform for marketing because it’s cheap and can reach a lot of people. One fault is the fact that it caters to a particular crowd. So if your target audience is say men and women 60 and over, than Instagram marketing is probably not the way to go. Instagram has a younger crowd but that may not always be the case since marketing is always changing.
All in all, utilizing Instagram for giveaways is letting your consumers promote your brand for you, which in my opinion is a stroke of genius.
