Although I’m not a fan of the Patriots or the Eagles, I sat down to watch the Super Bowl with my family on Sunday. Because I wasn’t exactly rooting for one team or the other, my family and I got the most entertainment from the commercials. The following are reviews of our particular favorites:
1. Doritos/Mountain Dew: As a huge Game of Thrones fan, I was happy to see Peter Dinklage staring in the Doritos ad. Not only was this advertisement entertaining, but it sparked a conversation about the hit HBO drama. Fans everywhere began tweeting about the possible relationship between the new Doritos Blaze Chips and the possibility of Tyrion’s Targaryen Lineage.
This advertisement turned out to be a genius partnership with Mountain Dew. The Doritos and Mountain Dew brands came together to form a 1 minute rap battle between Peter Dinklage and Morgan Freeman. Because this products are often consumed together, this was a smart move for both brands.
2. It’s a Tide Ad: David Harbour threw us for a loop in this 1 minute advertisement. Harbour argued that every Super Bowl Advertisement is a Tide ad because they all feature clean, stain-free clothing.
Airing 90 seconds of TV spots and 10 seconds of Billboards, this promotion cost parent company, Proctor & Gamble, tens of millions of dollars. I imagine Tide must feel pressure to positively market their brand after many started snacking on Tide Pods.
3. Alexa Lost Her Voice: This advertisement features celebrities Gordon Ramsey, Cardi B, Rebel Wilson, Sir Anthony Hopkins and even the founder, Jeff Bezos. Not only did this advertisement poke fun at the $105 billion dollar industry, it may have hinted at the new second location of Amazon’s headquarters. Among the 20 cities being considered for the anxiously awaited Amazon HQ2, Austin, Texas is one of them. The advertisement begins with Alexa providing the weather report for Austin Texas. Afterward, viewers took to twitter to further dissect the advertisement.
