Recently, it was announced that Atlanta would soon be getting a brand new chicken chain. With Chick-fil-A and Zaxby’s headquartered in Atlanta, and many other fast food chains in the Atlanta market, do we really have space for a new chicken spot in our hearts, and in our wallets?
Let’s meet Huey Magoo’s. Huey Magoo’s a Florida based chain, and has found success with its chicken for one, two, and family meals. You have the choice of having your chicken tenders tossed in garlic parmesan, or in their signature sauce, for no additional fee. Besides the standard chicken tenders, Huey Magoo’s also sells sandwiches, wraps, and salads.
Huey Magoo’s might have some issues as it has a very similar feel to other chains, like Zaxby’s and Raising Cane’s. While Zaxby’s has many stores and is headquartered in Atlanta, the closest Raising Cane’s is located in Athens Georgia, about an 1hr 30 min, drive away. All three chains utilize crinkled cut fries, as oppose to McDonald’s standard cut, and Chick-fil-A’s signature waffle cut. Their similarities go one step further with the three, adding Texas toast and coleslaw to many of their meals.
Zaxby’s, Raising Cane’s, Burger King, and McDonald’s have never been known for their store decor, which can take away from the overall experience in the chains. Other chains, like Chick-fil-A and Tropical Smoothies Café, on the other hand do provide well designed restaurants for their patrons. From the prototypes, it seems like Huey Magoo’s team has spent time on the design and the overall experience it wants it’s customers to have.
Over the years Zaxby’s, along with other chains like Subway, have seen a great decline in their sales and presence within the industry. These companies have not been able to keep up with the changing tastes and preferences of customers. Other chains, like Tropical Smoothie, have seen a steady rise in their market share, as they appeal to more health conscious consumers, and have a quality reputation that is hard to achieve when serving fast foods.
For Huey Magoo’s to be successful, they too will have to make sure they are up to date on customer preferences. With Atlanta moving from a large southern city, into the technological and entertainment hub of the south, customers are beginning to expect more. This trend has been especially apparent in areas like Buckhead and Midtown, who have been successful in removing “lower quality” chains. Huey Magoo’s will need to captivate a wide range of audiences, from students, to adults, to families. Many of the most successful fast food chains, show the experiences customers can gain, through their social media platforms. As a new comer to the Atlanta scene, their first social media posts will help solidify their spot in Atlanta, if done well.
