Gillette vs Nike?

Nike and their new ad featuring Colin Kaepernick was the talk of the internet for the past two weeks. Everyone seemed to have very strong opinions on the ad and whether it was right or wrong.

This week Gillette released their latest ad campaign, with the slogan being “Your Best Never Comes Easy.”

To many, this ad seemed as though it was a clap back to Nike’s commercial. The Gillette ad features NFL Rookie Shaquem Griffin, who happens to be an amputee. Both ads show the sacrifices professional athletes have made during their life, however one takes a very political turn. While some viewers appreciated that, others did not. Many have taken to Twitter to voice their support of Gillette and Griffin by saying things like, “so powerful! thank you @gillette” and “shaquem is so inspiring. best commercial I have seen in awhile.”

Consumers are rapidly taking sides as to which one they believe did a better job at conveying the idea of sacrifice, but did the two ads really intend to go head to head? No one can say for sure, however two ad campaigns coming out around the same time, with the same theme but two very different approaches…hmmm…

Take a look below and see for yourself.

I was drawn to your blog post immediately, because I really appreciate how Nike has sided with Kaepernick but had no idea that there was even another brand making a similar movement. That being said, I still have not watched the ad even though you posted it, because I am not sure if I want to become part of the crowd that will be debating “which ad is better” or “if the second ad was simply created to follow the trend rather than to support the athlete.” However, thank you for raising my awareness that these might be questions to ask, and providing a place where I can view the video for myself.
