Snapchat has been wrecked by negative reviews and declining user engagement for months, yet it still remains extremely popular with younger audiences. Each user still opens the app about 20 times per day, on average and their 188 million users end up posting over three billion Snaps each and every day.
Snapchat is not taking these hits personally and continuing to release new additions to the application. The social media application just announced a new feature that would allow users content to be widely viewed around the world. The first addition to this feature was the snap map which was launched back in February which provided a new way to share relevant Snaps and find content during major happenings. Now this new addition will allow users and publishers to merge their content together for a more holistic story. Essentially Snapchat is allowing publishers (such as businesses) to fully utilize the content that their users are creating.
The first example video linked here was released by TechCrunch. The video shows an average user being able to collaborate with a news publisher to share a story about an active shooter. The possibilities with this technology could be endless.
If the app could figure out how to allow publishers/businesses such as restaurants or nail salons, utilize this feature it could provide live reviews and directly generate more traffic. I’m sure someone at Snapchat has considered that option, but if they haven’t it would be a great addition because the world loves reviews before trying a new service or product.
What do you think about SnapChat releasing this new feature? There’s definitely tons of concerns that come with introducing this feature, but it’ll be interesting to see how it helps the social media application grow and how this feature will affect other social media applications.
