Is SnapChat Making A Comeback?

Tags :

Snapchat has been wrecked by negative reviews and declining user engagement for months, yet it still remains extremely popular with younger audiences. Each user still opens the app about 20 times per day, on average and their 188 million users end up posting over three billion Snaps each and every day.

Snapchat is not taking these hits personally and continuing to release new additions to the application. The social media application just announced a new feature that would allow users content to be widely viewed around the world. The first addition to this feature was the snap map which was launched back in February which provided a new way to share relevant Snaps and find content during major happenings. Now this new addition will allow users and publishers to merge their content together for a more holistic story. Essentially Snapchat is allowing publishers (such as businesses) to fully utilize the content that their users are creating.

The first example video linked here was released by TechCrunch. The video shows an average user being able to collaborate with a news publisher to share a story about an active shooter. The possibilities with this technology could be endless.

If the app could figure out how to allow publishers/businesses such as restaurants or nail salons, utilize this feature it could provide live reviews and directly generate more traffic. I’m sure someone at Snapchat has considered that option, but if they haven’t it would be a great addition because the world loves reviews before trying a new service or product.

What do you think about SnapChat releasing this new feature? There’s definitely tons of concerns that come with introducing this feature, but it’ll be interesting to see how it helps the social media application grow and how this feature will affect other social media applications.

I had no idea about this new feature! I think it is a great idea, especially in regards to what you mentioned about businesses being able to cultivate stories about live reviews of their product or service. I am interested to see how Snapchat users will need to go about sending videos to be considered for these business stories, and if these people will be notified if their Snapchat makes it onto said story. This also once again brings up the importance of being aware of your privacy (or lack thereof) on social media. I am excited to see this feature in action!

I think this is a very interesting step for snapchat to take, and could help revive the user usage they are losing. However, I believe they may not see results as high as they expect if they figure out how to allow businesses to use the feature. Why? Well, no only has Instagram taken over their story fetter, but you can also send “snaps” back and forth. However, this will be their least concern as iOS 12 has just been released, and has a new feature inside messages, which is sending editable images with text, stickers, emojis and writing right in iMessage. If Apple continues to make improvements to this feature, Snapchat could see another decline in usage, making their new feature lose interest from business, because those who they would want to target would no longer be on the platform.

While I think the idea is good in theory, I feel like this sort of feature addition would lead Snapchat to become more like Facebook in the fact that people may start to be unable to distinguish fake news from the truth. If users are allowed to post their own content merged with business and news accounts, how will it be differentiated from what the professionals are posting? Will anyone, anywhere be able to post to a public news feed? How would content be categorized and available to people? I’m just concerned that this new feature will overload the social platform with junk and will eventually wash out any structure and reliability that the platform currently has.
