Movies and Digital Marketing: The Circle

 

The Circle follows the journey of a young woman working at a powerful tech company called the Circle. Throughout the film we see privacy begin to truly disappear as the tech company introduces intrusive technology, allowing them to monitor everyone’s activities, even inside people’s homes.

 

There are several noticeable parallels that can be drawn from the film to the real world. One of these is social media, which media is paramount in the film, and those who do not choose to participate are looked upon as outsiders. While we don’t share such an extreme view in reality, it is now considered unusual if someone doesn’t have any forms of social media, whether that’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or even Linked-In. In both the movie and reality, it becomes difficult to gather information on a person if they have no online presence.

 

Information is vital in order for digital marketing to work. Marketers use it to determine demographics and target segments for their brands, and without social media, the practice wouldn’t be able to exist. The use of cookies allows companies to track our activity on the web and discern our dislikes and market to them. What The Circle does is take the idea to the extreme, sharing extremely private information such as medical conditions to the public, with the idea that transparency is ideal, in all aspects of life.

 

Overall, I thought the movie did a good job in warning audiences about the importance of privacy and face to face interaction with others. Privacy is integral to the human experience, and should be protected, even in this increasingly information obsessed world.
