Gucci’s most useless product

Gucci’s most useless product

For the past few days, there has been a social media uproar over Gucci’s new swimsuit. Its main problem? You can’t swim in it! Gucci says “wear it with skirts, denim and anything high-rise.” However, Gucci also says wearing it in the ocean or pool would be “criminal”. It is made of a nylon blend that is not compatible with chlorine. The un-swimmable swimsuit comes at the steep price of about $400.  So why not categorize it as a bodysuit? Why not make it in a different material?

Apparently, all of twitter is wondering the same thing. Most tweets are rife with puns in regards to the swimsuit. The general public finds that spending all the money on a somewhat “useless” product is outrageous. Even the comedian and social media influencer White Yardie made jokes about the suit in a video. His main point was that if you spend all that money on a swimsuit, then you should be able to swim in it constantly and it should hold up.

Regardless of the public outrage, the suit has sold out online. The vintage style is very popular amongst Gucci’s target market. And even though people are making fun of Gucci, they are talking about the brand and keeping them a part of the social conversation.

So, is this product a swimming success for Gucci? Absolutely.

What screams wealth more than buying something that isn’t even usable? I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the next generation of product appeal. Plus, Gucci just generated an extreme amount of free press (think IHOB).

While I understand the outrage at the product, Gucci has done a phenomenal job creating a brand that people will always buy. They have such a devout following of consumers that they can make useless products and it still sell out. As people continue to talk about the brand on social media, it is only adding to the brands image they are trying to create. I personally think that Gucci deserves are job well done!

I think Lilli’s comment hits it on the nail! Gucci has an extremely loyal consumer market and it’s for rich people who don’t mind spending $400. The company was just able to create some buzz about a product but their intended target audience doesn’t mind the price at all. It’s smart! I wonder if more brands will continue to announce controversial things for free publicity.

Honestly, luxury brands just capitalize on their name. For those that can afford it it’s not sweat off their back but luxury brands exploit the consumers in so many ways and don’t ever get called out on it.
