Snap Maps

Recently I had a debate with a friend about security and privacy of your location. I do not mind if my close friends know where I am and in fact I think for safety reasons it is actually very comforting. However, some people I know do not wish for friends, family and companies like Apple, Snapchat and other big data companies knowing their each and every move. Snap Map is a feature of snapchat that allows you to see the location of friends using their Bitmoji in the place they last used snapchat. It was created to enhance Snapchatter ability to know where and when events were taking place. My perspective is that by using our phones we are giving away our rights to complete privacy so I tend to just embrace it and use it for fun! I could see how this feature could be dangerous especially if you were unaware that your friends could see your location or you made your activity public.

What are your thoughts on Snap map, GPS tracking, and find my friends? Do you utilize these functions for beneficial reasons? Did snapchat do a good enough job telling users about the new feature?

I think Snap Map is fun and i enjoy having my location on. I get some people don’t, but I think people shouldn’t be adding randoms as friends and having their snapchat available to everyone. There are settings so you can make it more private. I only allow my actual friends or people I know pretty well to have me on snapchat, so I never really feel “in danger.” Everything from GPS tracking, to Find My Friends, to Snap Map can be utilized safely if you are careful who you are using these features with. It is a two way street, so just be smart in who you are sharing with!!

I agree with the controversial issue you proposed about companies and friends all being able to track your location through such apps like snapchat. I talked about a similar topic known as Beacon Technology that businesses use to track a customer’s location and it brings up the same issue of privacy. I think there are beneficial ways to use these innovations, but users should monitor the use and turn off these services when not needed to keep their privacy as well.
