The Tiger Effect

This past weekend, Atlanta hosted the PGA Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. The field was cut to the top 30 players on tour based on points accumulated throughout the season.

Fortunately for the Tour Championship, Tiger Woods not only made the field, but won the tournament. I’ve seen countless tweets and Instagram posts showcasing Tiger’s win, his following throughout the tournament, and pictures of past victories on tour.

The hashtag #tourchampionship has over 15k tags on Instagram, and the Tour Championship’s Instagram page (playofffinale) has over 14K followers, which is pretty wild considering it’s not a major. The page has a great mix of content leading up to and throughout the Tour Championship, as well as product placement of sponsors and other promotions that were held at the event.

The Tiger Effect draws people to not only attend these golf tournaments, but also post content leading up to and after the event. Tiger draws the average golf fan out and his presence alone drives media outlets and ratings on television. When asked about breaking the internet during his press conference Sunday night, Tiger joked that they didn’t even have internet when he first came on tour. Essentially, despite his multiple extramarital affairs and a DUI just over a year ago, Tiger is back to bringing ratings to television and driving revenue to the golf world.

Yeah, this dude just won the Tour Championship.
