¿¿Tinder University??

In late August, Tinder launched a new service called Tinder University; a version of the app only available to college students. It’s so exclusive that you need your .edu to log in.

Once you’re in the university version of the app, your school logo will appear on your profile and add to the number of things potential matches will use to judge you.

Due to the newness of this feature, the success of this feature is unknown but I don’t think it will be that successful. For the most part, the tinder demographic for most college towns are students and most put their colleges in their bio. In addition to the fact that you can switch between regular tinder and tinder university, the feature contradicts its purpose. Their appeal stimulate the interest of their younger demographic appears unnecessary.

What do you think? Are you willing to give your .edu to a dating service or is that shitting where you eat?

I have seen so many ads on Snapchat to promote Tinder University, but I haven’t downloaded it, until now. Tinder University is not searchable on the App Store, but is accessed through the main Tinder platform. After signing up for Tinder, you are invited to Tinder U.Tinder U is only available to students at 4 year, degree granting, colleges and universities in the US only. The first guy to pop up was, AJ, 29 who works at Terminus Tees. I am in university mode, but he clearly is not in a university. At the bottom of Aj’s likes, which include grabbing butts, it gives an option to recommend them to a friend. The second guy, Mike, did go to a school, KSU, plugged his snapchat and instagram. Harrison, was 27, and had a job at GEMC Federal credit union. Robert, 18, was a school senior. And then, I finally figured out the Tinder University is seamlessly integrated into the regular Tinder, the only difference is Tinder University, underlines and highlights the school in the left corner of the picture. Some people, have even opted to add their instagram to their bio. Some students, even resorted to asking for Venmo cash. I am not really sure how effective Tinder University, with regular Tinder incorporated in it, and asking for student emails, this campaign was a giant waste of money and time.

I saw this and thought it was interesting. I wonder what the motive behind the update is. I feel like it’s being used to collect more data on its users, but like you said, the demographic that is actively using Tinder is already college students. Maybe it’s used to generate more users by making it seem more exclusive.
