IHOP: Pancakes, Burgers… and Now Beer?

IHOP has already managed to be the topic of discussion this year, but can they do it again? Earlier this year IHOP created an equally interesting and annoying campaign to promote their burgers. IHOb raised a lot of controversy initially, and eventually died down after being treated like a meme. Now that this is over, they are onto their next stunt and this time it involves the beer industry.

IHOP is promoting their new publicity stunt that involves fall themed beer coined “IHOPS.” They posted a short instagram video that gave a teaser of the upcoming product line. The post was somewhat vague and urged viewers to go to their website for more information. The comments all seemed to be positive so hopefully this marketing stunt will cause more positive reactions than the previous. This beer will be a pumpkin pancake stout available through October in the New York tri state area through October.

This campaign doesn’t seem like it will ruffle as many feathers as its predecessor, IHOb, did but maybe it will create some buzz around their brand and generate more business. Who knows, maybe IHOPS will be this year’s unicorn frappuccino?

I give props to IHOP for putting this much thought into their marketing campaigns. I can’t think of a single other restaurant that I have heard about this much on social media besides IHOP. I wonder if all of these publicity stunts have actually increased restaurant traffic and increased sales. Even though I have heard about these campaigns, it has not drawn me to visit one of their restaurants and eat a meal there. The beer thing is interesting, because you don’t particularly pair beer with breakfast, so it may be further supporting their burger stunt, making you want to celebrate fall buy stopping by IHOP to order a burger and a pumpkin beer. However, I don’t see many people thinking of IHOP as a choice to get a quick burger or a beer, so it will be interesting to see if this actually work.

I am real interested to hear of the motives behind all these stunts. As pumpkin flavored drinks and foods are common by every business this time of year, maybe they wanted to hop on that train. Will Waffle House come out with pumpkin spice flavored waffles to compete? I think the beer could be a good twist for the company, maybe for people who want to enjoy a beer with brunch? It doesn’t seem to target me much at all, but I wonder what the next stunt will be.
