Taqueria Del Sol’s Taco of the Week is a Hamburger Taco

Whenever someone asks me what type of food I would eat if I were to only be able to eat one cuisine for the rest of my life, I always say Mexican, no hesitation. I have never understand those that say breakfast: I personally can not relate to that on any level. I am from Texas, and the first meal I have when I get home is always Tex-Mex. Good Mexican food is really hard to find in Georgia. Tacos simply do not count as Mexican food, but it suffices while I’m here.

I know there will be people that read this and think, “ugh Taqueria Del Sol is so overrated.” I disagree. I think it is DELICIOUS. And I love it. I consistently go multiple times a week because it never disappoints and it’s inexpensive. I had it for lunch today, and I have plans to go with a friend for dinner tomorrow. And that will probably not be my last Taq meal this week. Last weekend, I went for dinner Friday night and Saturday night… with the same people. The last time I went to to Taqueria Del Sol, I was greeted by name. The girl who works the cash register, Audrey, said “Hey Lauren. What can I get you today?” Best day ever. I’m a regular.

When you are standing in line, you have to option to write down your email address, joining the weekly newsletter with announcements and specials. In case you aren’t on the email list, the special this week is a black bean enchilada: haven’t had it, but I am hearing great things. I recently followed Taqueria on Instagram where they also post their weekly specials. You can never be too informed. I really kind of love that they aren’t super engaged on social media, especially because they are doing just fine without it. But, mainly, I like the cool, chill vibe that they are giving off right now.

Final note. The manager made T-shirts for the staff that have the restaurant name on the front but in greek letters, so it looks like a fraternity shirt. The back of the T-shirt says “Everyday is a taco social.” I love them. I’ve asked three different employees if I could buy it off of them. I offered a sizable monetary trade, but they all said no. I also asked the manager if they would make some to sell. He said he would consider, so we will see.

I love Taqueria, but I just cannot consider it good tex-mex. To me it feels more like a wanna-be tex-mex place that appeals more to sorority girls and hipsters, but they produce great food nonetheless. I am from Atlanta, so I grew up going to Taqueria, but I think I’ve only been in Athens once. Athens really struggles when it comes to authentic tex-mex. Tlaloc is decent, Agua Linda is decent but other than that everything else is pretty low quality. If you’re looking for GREAT tex-mex in GA, go to Nuevo Laredo on Chatahoochee Ave in Atlanta. It’s hard to beat.
