Career fair season is upon us! Lately on campus it seems as though there are more suits, ties, and heels rather than our typical over-sized tees, norts, and New Balances. Everyone is dropping backpacks for nice briefcases and 5-Star notebooks for resume paper. Just during this last week, Marketing, Risk Management, Engineering, the main UGA Career Fair, pus more have all taken place here in Athens. Recruiters are flying and driving in from all over the nation to network with UGA students for internship and full-time job opportunities.
It’s all very exciting and absolutely terrifying at the same time- but it’s very important to prepare in as many ways as possible. First, look up the companies. Most, if not all, are on LinkedIn and it’s recommended to have some facts lined up and ready to discuss with each company and recruiter that you approach. Showing the recruiter that you took time to look into the company itself definitely calls for some brownie points. Second, do a run-through of all your social media and make sure it is prime and proper! If the recruiter researches you later, the last thing you want is for him or her to find out about your crazy Thursday night when you took one too many Buddha bombs. Third, update and print your resumes! Recruiters also love to check out your LinkedIn profile, resume, projects, and experience… stay up-to-date so that all of your information aligns and is consistent with what you say in person.
Don’t get me wrong though, I am definitely not a pro at this- but I have had my fair share of career fairs and these tips are what I have to offer. One thing I am 100% confident about though is that your digital presence matters, and tells a lot about you, even after the recruiter has met you face-to-face. Use that to your advantage! Be digitally and personally impressive!
