How Long is Too Long?

Grey’s Anatomy – 15 seasons

Friends – 10 seasons

The Office – 9 seasons

These are just a few of my favorite shows that happen to have longer than the average amount of seasons. The Office was a show that I had a hard time getting into but I watched it for the inside jokes and references that my friends would make. Friends has been my all time favorite show for such a long time, I even fall asleep to it every night. Finally, Grey’s Anatomy has got me hooked and I am already on season three after a week.

Although I had trouble sticking with The Office I did finish all nine seasons of it and did not hate it in the end, however I was not heartbroken it was over either. On the other hand, when Friends ended I bawled my eyes out and watched as many interviews with the cast as I could. In these interviews they all mentioned how they wished they had filmed one last season all together. Grey’s Anatomy as many people know, has just come out with their fifteenth season on ABC network. Which many of my friends have told me, is way too long, especially considering that every main character that you fall in love with dies.

I have noticed that The Office is most popular amongst my generation where as Friends has been popular for decades. It was a show that my mom was always so excited to watch when each one came out on live television. However, Grey’s Anatomy has the strangest viewer base to me. For some, you would think that sticking with a show for fifteen seasons would be insane. Yet there is a large enough viewer base for this show that ABC network signed it on for another season. My question is: Are these people really stuck on the buzz of the story line, or are they one’s that have watched it all along and have to ride it out until the end? Either way, Grey’s Anatomy has done some incredible advertising in order to keep their show and characters interesting to the viewers.

There have been shows that I have watched where I thought to myself that six seasons was way too long, and other shows like Friends, where I thought that ten seasons was not enough. Do you have any shows with many seasons that you have watched just for the sake of finishing? Or any shows that you wished lasted a few more seasons longer? How long is too long?

I love Grey’s Anatomy. But, I do think they should stop. Every time they roll out a new season I think, “Omg, I thought it was over.” However, due to the show’s massive following I think they can be successful rolling out seasons until Ellen Pompeo is safely buried if they wanted to. This massive following means that they don’t have to invest in as much advertising as they would starting anew show, they already have 4.5 million followers on Instagram. It would be cool to see a breakdown of their social media platform usage or blog content about the show and how it leads to more conversions for ABC because they met consumers needs for unique content.

I think about this a lot recently because there are a lot of newer shows on Netflix now that they stop remaking after the third or fourth season. But then you have Grey’s, and don’t get me wrong, it’s a really entertaining show but I stopped after the season 11 fiasco when you know who dies, I had had enough. Sure they could keep making seasons because they have the fan base, but where is their sense of decency, literally breaking hearts all over America just for some added drama.

I personally am a huge fan of grey’s. Since I have watched it since day one, I would say I am a loyal follower. However, it is a completely different show than the one that started so many years ago. Only 3 or 4 main characters are left and other characters have rotated a lot. However, you can bet I will be watching again tomorrow night.

I also have recently started watching Grey’s Anatomy, and have quickly gotten through about four seasons. I can’t see any way I finish this show though. 14 seasons completed with the 15th in progress?? When I know most of my favorite characters will leave or die or both? I don’t know if I can do it. Grey’s has definitely gone on too long, but if it still has an audience and makes its money, I’m sure it will continue until it no longer makes such profits. I think Shonda Rhimes also want to beat ER for the longest running medial drama in TV history (15 seasons).

I think a show like Breaking Bad ended just in time. That shows in a slightly different situation, as it has a more concrete set of storylines, and is made more for storytelling than entertainment like Grey’s, but I think Breaking Bad best exemplifies ending a show at just the right amount of episodes.

Another show that has lasted far too long is a favorite of mine– Spongebob. But similarly with Grey’s, it still makes a lot of money, so I get why its still running.
