Last Monday, Snapchat directors announced a new upcoming feature called “Visual Search”. Partnering with Amazon, Snapchat users will soon be able to take a picture of an item, and be able to instantly go to the Amazon page and purchase.
The premise of the update revolves around providing more utility for Snapchat, without having users directly exit the app. Additionally, it helps to demonstrates more monetization opportunities for the app that has struggled with capitalizing on their massive user base to this point. This comes on the heels of the “Snap Deals” feature, which would provide geofocused ads in the app.
As someone who hates the emergence of ads in social media apps, I actually think this is a pretty cool idea. It also opens the door for sliding this feature into buying tickets to concerts and sporting events among other things.
