Chinese spies have reached and hacked almost 30 companies in the U.S. Two of these include Amazon and Apple.
Implanted within companies’ server motherboards designed by Elemental, IT technicians discovered a microchip, smaller than a grain of rice, that wasn’t part of the server’s original blueprint. Once discovered, Amazon, reported their finding to U.S. authorities. This sent signals of scare throughout the IT community. Elemental servers were used by the DoD, CIA, and Navy Warships.
Investigators found that this hack chip allowed Chinese attackers to create altered machines, doorways into the network. By implanting the small chips during the manufacturing process, IT teams went years without noticing the chip. Approximately 3 years have passed with the chip in place. Officials are describing this as the “most significant supply chain attack known to have been carried out against American companies.”
This information has just recently been discovered, and officials are keeping their mouths shut. There is no conclusive data on what has been leaked and its effects, but it is nothing to forget. Security protocols and manufacturing processes will change in the near future, costing companies millions of dollars alone. This added in with money lost to data leaks will surely put a dent in these companies.
