Meme-ingful Friendships

One of my all time favorite notifications to receive on my phone is a blurb saying I’ve been sent or tagged in a meme. This seems to be a common form of communication between me and my friends. One of us will be scrolling through social media, see a hilarious and relatable meme, then send it to our meme group chat on Instagram (“girls who vibe with memes”). These memes can provide a humorous study break, remind us of an inside joke, or even be the topic of a full conversation later that night.

It’s because of this shared audience appreciation that companies are starting to turn to memes to include in their marketing tactics. On Twitter and Instagram, in order to seem more relatable and have a light-hearted tone, companies will post funny memes that relate to their business. These are more likely to be retweeted, shared with friends, and get likes because they are enjoyable content. They also help boost brand image on social media.

Overall, I enjoy memes and love seeing companies that are on board with posting them for their audiences. I hope to see more brands posting some humorous content rather than only posting content to help sell their products.

I completely agree, memes make the world go round! My Instagram DMs are always blowing up with different memes that are so relatable and so ridiculous. I follow a lot of different clothing accounts that I have never shopped at just because of their posts of memes. I think it is so smart to engage your target market this way because I do have a relationship with the company over Instagram even though I havent made a purchase. It is cultivating a relationship for future purchases which is so important.

This is great! I do social media for a company and we had a team meeting a couple of months ago where we basically discussed how we need to post more memes to engage with more followers. I am notorious for tagging my friends in crazy memes (its basically the only reason that I go on Facebook anymore).

I think meme marketing is getting really annoying. I honestly think once marketing people start using a particular meme it is safe to say the meme is dead. The corniness of companies using memes usually works to their advantage but for I can’t help but cringe at marketing memes.
