The Intern is a 2015 film proving that you’re never too old to learn new things. The film stars Robert De Niro who plays Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old who finds himself interning at the online fashion website ‘About the Fit.’ Ben gets assigned directly to the founder of ‘About the Fit,’ Jules Ostin, who is played by the lovable and one of my personal favorites, Anne Hathaway. Ben is an instant hit at the office because of his kind and helpful attitude and his willingness to learn. His wisdom gained both from his work and life experience proves to be more useful to Jules than she originally thought. The two get very close and Ben helps Jules with more than just work when personal issues in her life come to light.
I chose to watch this film after I saw the amazing Anne Hathaway was a lead, but also after reading a short synopsis. I loved the idea of the storyline and thought it was a must-watch. The movie proved to be everything I was hoping and more. I figured the movie would be about how even though Ben is not versed in today’s technology, he would help Jules with experience that is still applicable in today’s times. I had no idea the movie would take a personal turn and he would impact her life as much as he did her business. Ben becomes a personal advisor and almost counselor to Jules when she finds out her husband is cheating on her – something that can be a fear of women who are the breadwinner or even the only working person in a relationship.
Ben plays his biggest support role when the news breaks, telling Jules she “should be able to have a huge career without having to accept the fact her husband is having an affair as payback.” The guilt of being a working mom is something I know that can weigh heavy on women these days, and that guilt can lead to the belief that they have to accept treatment less than they deserve. This movie touches on a lot of themes that are relevant in today’s business world for women, which is why I think I loved it so much. Balancing a career and life I know may be tricky down the road, but is never impossible when you have the right people surrounding you. What Ben thought would just be a way to keep busy in his post-retired life turned out to be life changing both for him and for Jules. Their friendship is something that neither of them ever expected, but both of them needed.
