Movie Review #3: The Intern

Tags :

The intern is about Ben Whittaker, played by Robert De Niro, who is a retired widow looking to do something with his spare time. He applies to be an intern at a fashion company where Anne Hathaway’s character, Jules Ostin, is in charge. With a large age gap between the two, it’s an interesting and awkward dynamic for a younger woman to be bossing Ben around.

At first, Jules is standoff-ish and uninterested in getting to know Ben personally. He begins to go out of his way to impress Jules with tasks like cleaning a messy desk and offering to drive her home. Ben becomes a major support system for everyone in the company, but especially to Jules. The movie provides comic relief in outrageous scenes like when Ben and a few other employees go so far as to break into Jules’ mother’s house to delete an angry email Jules sent to her by accident. After this favor, Jules takes time to get to know Ben personally over some drinks.

A major plot twist comes when Ben discovers Matt, Jules’ husband, is having an affair. Jules confesses she has been aware Matt wasn’t telling the truth and admits juggling her CEO position and a family life is difficult. Ben encourages her to keep her position as CEO instead of hiring a new one simply to please investors and her cheating husband.

Jules eventually confronts Matt about the cheating and forces him to end the affair. With his encouragement, she decides to change her mind about stepping down as CEO. She runs off to find Ben to tell him the news. The movie ends with Jules finding Ben in a Tai Chi class and joining in with her life finally figured out.
