After a year of waiting, fans of the hack and slash RPG known as “Diablo” were hoping to here news about an extension to the Diablo franchise. An original story hadn’t been released in years, and fans were expecting to see brand new content unveiled at Blizzcon. These fans were sorely disappointed as the “new content” they ended up receiving was a re-skinned version of the game, but on a mobile platform.
The majority of the fans for this game are all PC players. They put incredible amounts of money into their gaming rigs in order to play on the highest graphic levels with the highest frame rates. To them, hearing that the new Diablo game would only be accessible on Mobile with would mostly likely include lots of micro transactions was like a slap in the face. Once the developer announced that the sole platform of the game would be on mobile he was instantly booed by the audience. His response was even more cringe worthy as he looked out to the crowd of fans and asked them, “what you guys don’t have phones?” This critical mistake caused him to get booed even more, and in the end he was seen crying backstage after receiving immense backlash from the fans.
Creating this game for mobile was already a mistake, but the fact that the developer went on to make an asinine remark to the crowd increased the level of disapproval. As a result, Blizzard’s stock took a fall and has yet to currently recover to where they were before the announcement.
