Walking Billboards, Are They Worth the Money?

Gameday stickers are nothing new to see on UGA’s campus on a Saturday in Athens. Whether they are ways to show membership in clubs or add a bit of school spirit, gameday stickers have just been accepted as part of the uniform to go cheer on the dawgs – at home or on the road.  A new trend throughout college campuses are students sporting additional stickers, buttons, and other paraphernalia promoting restaurants or apps seeking for more brand awareness or increased downloads and sales.

For students, passing out these stickers is an easy way to note that they are a brand ambassador and tell their parents that they have in fact secured an internship for the semester. One of them prevalent ones on campus this fall is Bumble, a social and dating app that provides each user with potential matches based on location. In a town primarily made up of red and black, the yellow stickers provided by Bumble very obviously stand out and draw attention. Some of the subtler users and providers of these physical advertisements seek to play on recent trends in Georgia football.

While this type of promotion is easy to implement, is it truly worth the money? In my opinion it’s not. More often than not, gamedays are spent by large groups of friends or known associates standing around counting down the minutes to kickoff. These are the same people that tend to already travel with you to restaurants or know where you prefer to shop. The individuals these organizations these individuals should be trying to target are ones that have never heard about them and are looking to try something new.

Seeing a sticker, that doesn’t even necessarily tell you what they are promoting, would not prompt me to even take a moment to look up the few blurry words I could make out while passing on a sidewalk.
