UGA Hidden Gems: Cafe Racer

gW1ZzBs

Watch out Mamma’s Boy, a new biscuit is in town. Cafe Racer, located in Crawford, just minutes outside of Athens, is serving up some of the best biscuits and donuts in Georgia.

Imagine driving down US-78, an auto salvage service is on your left, farmland is on your right. Suddenly, you see a small stand-alone bright blue building. You’re intrigued by the little building with a vintage motorcycle illustration on the side, so you slow down and pull into the gravel and dirt drive-thru. You find that the menu consists of extremely well-priced coffee drinks, an ever-changing selection of donuts, and a biscuit sandwich. You’re in heaven.

This was my experience when visiting Cafe Racer – a heavenly one. The drive-thru coffee and donut shop is an Athens-area hidden gem. For years, the shop’s owner worked on a vintage motorcycle shop and wanted to open a coffee shop based on the ‘café racer’ concept and vintage aesthetic. Early 2018, Cafe Racer was born – drive-thru shop next to the road, for motorcyclists, truckers and standard customers to take a quick meal and then keep driving.

The cafe has a diverse array of donuts including chocolate, cinnamon roll, and espresso. Hot tip: follow @caferacerhwy78 on Instagram to see their donuts of the day and pictures of all the dogs that visit the shop. (If you bring your dog, get $1 off any donut.)

As a UGA student, going to this shop means going on a little adventure. When the weather rises above 50 degrees, I’ll go on that adventure with some friends. We’ll roll down the windows, blast early 2000’s pop music, and eat one too many donuts.

I look forward to the rest of the Athens community discovering some of the best biscuits and donuts in the state. If you’re looking for a 30-minute adventure, look no further than Cafe Racer Donuts and Coffee.

Oh my goodness! I love discovering new Athens places so I am so thankful for this. Right outside of my hometown in Calhoun, Georgia there is a similar type of place and the food is SO good! I wonder why it’s the random little places that are always the best.

I’m always on the lookout for new places to adventure with friends in and around Athens, so thank you so much for sharing. Cafe Racer is such a great find and hopefully I’ll be able to make a little spring road trip (windows down of course) there once the weather gets warmer. Another hidden gem that’s not too far away is Coffee Camper Co. + Revolutionaries Market in Monroe. It’s a great place to grab a coffee with a friend, but also explore local makers’ products as well!

I’m so glad you took the time to share this! I’m always looking for new restaurants to try in Athens and it’s so hard to find good breakfast food, without waiting over an hour to be seated or get your food. I’ll definitely have to try Cafe Racer in the near future.
