It’s Not Just Work/Life Balance

If you’re like me you don’t just have two things to balance in your life i.e. work and life. Many college students are in organizations, work, and go to school. Personally, I have three jobs, ride on the UGA IHSA Equestrian Team, compete with my personal horse, go to school full time, and try to have a social life.

So, how do you make it work? What do you do when it feels as if there are not enough hours in the day to get it all done? You take a deep breath, make a to do list, and you get it done no matter how overwhelmed you may feel.

Having a mostly set schedule has helped me tremendously. When I start the week I already know what days and times I work, my class schedule, and my lesson schedule. When working jobs or having other responsibilities with changing schedules makes it much more complicated to time manage. It may be worth it to talk to your manager or supervisor and see if you can work on solidifying a more set schedule.

You must write everything down! If you are as busy as me there is always something running through your head and often these thoughts begin to run together. Write down every responsibility, appointment, study time, social time, etc. that you have planned. Write down anything you think you may need to do or even ideas you have because it’s easy to forget these things. Even if you forget to look at your planner often (like me) the act of writing something down will help you to remember.

Make sure at least one of your activities that you make a habit brings you joy and lets you take your mind off of everything else. For me, that is riding. Even though I take my time in saddle seriously and see it as a training time to improve my horse and me I also find my joy there. My mind stops wandering and stressing about everything I have to do and in that moment I get to catch a break. No matter what that is for you, working out, reading a good book, going to a coffee shop, etc. make sure you take some time for your self every week. It will keep you sane.

As long as you stay organized and focused you can handle what life throws at you. Make sure your priorities are set and you check in with yourself every once and a while.

Make time for things that make you happy
