Student Spotlight: Julia Stain

Tags :

All the way from the very edge of the West coast, Julia Stain has traveled 1,997 miles from Palos Verdes, a beautiful peninsula in southern California, to simply experience something different. Julia is currently a third-year Advertising major within Grady, and I have gotten the pleasure to know Julia for the past three years through our sorority. Sometime within the middle of our sophomore year is when we became the great friends that we are today. During the last two and a half years, whenever we are out together and Julia meets someone new, without a doubt, she will get the classic, “What made you decide to come so far for school?” or “Why did you want to leave such a beautiful place like California?”

These constant reminders of why she left have been hard, and at times made her wonder if she made the right decision coming all the way out here for school. However, if you were to ask her now if she regrets leaving the golden coast for four years, to be in Athens, Georgia, where she knew absolutely no one, she would say, “This has been without a doubt, the best decision I have made thus far.”

Being from Atlanta, I have envied Julia for the relationship she has with this school and the people at it. She never worries about running into old, familiar faces from her past and always has had the opportunity to authentically be herself without a second thought, and she has successfully done so. Julia says, “I have grown in so many ways I could not imagine where I’d be maturity wise, if I had decided to stay close to home.” Being so far away forced her to become independent and put herself out there in ways which have prepared her for what is to come after college. The experience she has had on the east coast has been so great, but she says what she misses the most is “of course my family, but also the daily sunshine on my skin and the ability to walk to the beach at any hour of the day. I did not realize how special my home was until I left it.” Julia’s journey to the University of Georgia not only gave her a group of lifelong friends, a great education, but also this new appreciation for her home that she may have never gained if she had not taken the risk and left.

One out of the hundreds of sunsets Julia has experienced growing up, in her front yard…

Julia’s post college plans involve returning home to Los Angeles and hopefully working at an Advertising agency she admires. She has an interest in sports media and management and she would love to be at a firm that focuses on the industry, if possible. She spent last summer working for The Opening in LA and had a great experience being involved in multiple events for student sport organizations in LA and Dallas. Although Julia looks forward to her return home soon, she cannot believe she only has one more year left here in Athens and is unsure if it is enough time to soak it all in. Her horizons have been broadened by her decision to come to UGA, and she can’t imagine her life any different. Most of her college friends will stay closer to the East coast and she says, “I am not looking forward to that aspect of going back home, but it will be pretty awesome to have friends literally all over this country to visit.” If you ever get the chance to meet Julia on or off campus, do not hesitate to get to know her as much as you can. I am proud to know her and can firmly say my college experience would not have been the same without her and her positive energy in it.
